Dutch Darning Sampler

Many of the Dutch darning samplers were executed by girls of 12 - 17 years of age at school. Darning belongs more to the practical handwork category than to the fine and attractive category, but so many of these were so tastefully done that they fall into the latter group. A linen seamstress could provide an income for herself and her family if she knew how to decorate and mend samplers. It is believed that darning samplers originated in Holland, as the oldest ones known have been found there. Ours is a reproduction of a sampler made by E.G.S. in 1829. It has twill, tabby, rosepath, and holliepoint darn as well as the usual cross stitch, satin and eyelet.
